Safe Zone Time - opinions?
Posted by: hallucination - 02-23-2012, 02:52 PM - Forum: Chaos Discussion - Replies (28)

Revisiting the safe zone time after the 9 hour experiment. Please vote, and state your thoughts below.

I've not put in poll choices for "no safe zones" because Chaos has always had safe zones and lame safe zone play (like J12), and that's not going away. Also when safe zone time was 5 minutes, rather than forcing people back on the field to play as those advocating that short a time had hoped, the targets simply went to spec or left, yielding a lower population. So I've not included that choice either because we've tried it and it didn't work well for anyone.

--15 mins The Retail Release SVS (RR-SVS) setting. My opinion: Something of a balance between "taking a break" and "still playing the game" in that hunters could wait out the 15 minutes.

--45 mins Allows enough time to grab a quick meal. Requested by many people, and when it was put in the feedback was very positive. Did it increase zone population? Not much, but it did not decrease it.

--9 hours Requested with the speculation that it would lead to higher btys which would lead to higher population. Extraordinarily high btys can bring people into the zone to hunt, but they can also skew the Ave and Rating competition through a small number of kills; so it's not all positive. Enough time to go to work or sleep and come back.

To me, there is little difference between 45 mins and 9 hours in terms of game play. Both are ridiculously long periods of time for a real time game; the action comes to a halt longer than any player is willing to actively wait in either case. Did it increase population? Not significantly. Decrease? No. Feedback has been quite positive, with several people changing their minds over the course of the reset from "don't like" to "like."

Downsides of 9 hr safe time (or any long safe time):

First, any exploit possible with a 9 hr safe time is also possible with a 45 min one (or 15 mins for that matter), it's just the effort involved in executing it.

--Streak exploits. Sit in safe with the streak and wait for the zone to get very quiet, then bring in a friend and kill them over and over with no one else around. This is not new, really, and would be dealt with the same ways that are used to keep the integrity of Streaks and of the Reset Winners competition (disqualification, etc.).

--Antiwarp in safe for hours. People speculated at the beginning that this would happen. I thought only occasionally would someone accidentally leave aw on. No one could possibly be a big enough troll to intentionally do this for more than a short period of time (meaning that 3 months from now, no one would be sitting in safe every day to annoy people). Right? Well Mr. Explosion decided to try and be that very troll himself, in order prove that being a troll was possible and would be bad. BAD! Or something. Only a couple of players were upset by his action. The vast majority of people had no problem with him making it clear that he's a troll. There are ways to deal with this (and all trolls), so I don't consider this an issue if we keep long safe times.

--Holding the streak. We saw Gadianton hold the streak an entire day sitting in safe. This is the only real downside I see to long safe times -- not so much that the a personal Streak can be held that long (Gad did nothing wrong here), but that it prevents the Streak from being part of the normal, active conversation during play. If someone is sitting in safe, not playing, there are no announcements of who has the Streak, which is a goal for some of the players. The Streak was conceived as a continuous playing effort, during 15 min safe times, so short breaks were possible. There are solutions for this including going to safe for any length of time ending a streak; or a streak ending after sitting in safe for X amt of time. I'm not fond of these solutions. This still needs consideration.

As always in Chaos, with the various goals that different players have, there will be a variety of opinions ;) Thoughts?

just expand them to fit the pub (A1-T20) and it'll be a great map. put T20 (thx 1000) in the middle of spawn radius. the key factors is that it all flows and u can't really get too hung up.

Here is the weaker of my two maps. http://i41.tinypic.com/ampr8y.jpg

  S31 R2 Results, R3 Schedule

The Results:

2/19 3:25 pm Assassins def StarFire Elite 12-2 log

2/19 3:17 pm MiS def Sterling 12-0 log

2/19 2:50 pm Rebels def Llamas 12-6 log

2/19 2:17 pm FTNguyen def Renegade 12-0 log

Assassins, much to everyone's surprise, decimated SFE in 7m57s. Sika ended up with 6-1 9FR, as if anyone cares. More importantly, there was a kill at 0:00. Apparently all 4 asses were on top of MfA at game start.

Don't forget that both firing before go and flying at your enemies to this degree are not allowed.

Sterling no-showed.

Rebels beat Llamas 12-6 in a game that was tight for a good while, like most Llamas vs. Rebels games. These squads have been duking it out like it's 1998 for years now.

Renegade no-showed.

Standings after R2/14:

1 FTNguyen 2-0 21 0.583

2 Rebels 2-0 12 0.667

3 MiS 1-1 6 0.833

4 Assassins 1-1 -1 0.083

  Roster lock details
Posted by: Caerbannog - 02-19-2012, 05:23 PM - Forum: Pro League Discussion - Replies (2)

Rosters are now "soft-locked", meaning you can only add players on days that aren't Sundays. You do this by somehow messaging me with both the player's and the captain's approval. I suggest this forum for such activities.

Name changes are not allowed, like most of you know.

The rosters will be locked for existing players (no squadhopping) before round 4.

New players that are not on a squad can join up to round 10.

The no Sunday rule will be bent for squads who changed their name, like FTNGuyen to roster a guy previously on their roster who didn't tell what name they want yet. And squads like Renegade and MiS, who might not have had the opportunity to get their people together yet.

ahahaha, banned for using the name "A Fhucker". Not one single rule broken by using this name. This is what the Chaos staff are like. And people wonder why the zone sucks.

  S31 R1 Results, R2 Schedule
Posted by: Caerbannog - 02-14-2012, 02:53 PM - Forum: Pro League Discussion - Replies (3)

The Results:

2/12 3:48 pm Rebels def MiS 12-6 log

2/12 3:31 pm FTNguyen def Llamas 12-3 log

2/12 2:48 pm Renegade def StarFire Elite 12-9 log

2/12 2:29 pm Sterling def Assassins 12-1 log

Rebels managed to kill Hellsbane out by 4-4 score at 13:41, then their few years of experience took care of the rest pretty casually. Pog still managed to waste 4 WRs.

FTNGuyen vs. Llamas didn't really look much like a match, the 15 year off-season must've gotten to some people. So very shaky all over the place, horrible judgment calls.

Now the highlight of the round, Renegade debuted in league and actually beat StarFire Elite. The 12-9 game was exciting and provided many LULs and LOLs. What's more, Renegade only wasted one repel in those 9 deaths. Their constant rep kill attempts might help here, but hey, even that is more productive than dying with repels.

Sterling vs. Assassins was an intense 2v2 combat between pseudo&vars and Enforcer&bhang. It finished 6-1 and the other 6 lives were converted. Thus leaving us with the following standings.

Standings after R1/14:

1 Sterling 1-0 11 0

2 FTNguyen 1-0 9 0

3 Rebels 1-0 6 0

4 Renegade 1-0 3 0

5 StarFire Elite 0-1 -3 0

6 MiS 0-1 -6 0

7 Llamas 0-1 -9 0

8 Assassins 0-1 -11 0

------

The Dark is still asking around seeing if they maybe possibly want to participate. If they do want to join as a team, we can fit a ninth squad to the schedule by having one squad a week play double matches. This way no one still gets a BYE, and I don't have to do the entire schedule again.

The schedule for next weekend

3pm:

Renegade vs. FTNguyen

Llamas vs. Rebels

4pm:

StarFire Elite vs. Assassins

Sterling vs. MiS

The rosters are still unlocked as people are "trapped" in draft squads and older squads. You can remove yourself from any squad by logging on with the name stuck somewhere and !removeplayer squadyouarestuckin:%selfname

This is bullshit of how this is allowed to go on, tonight he had almost 300 bounty and about to die and he esc q's on me and I had aw on. Why havn't the rules changed on this. It should be illegal. He gets away with it all the time because he is the Biggest Pussy in the world and the Admins don't do anything. All this does is make me not want to play subspace anymore. So maybe when the Admins get off there ass and do something productive about this situation then I will come back and play but for now im done peace out !

News: Map, Master of Chaos, Jackpot and more
Posted by: hallucination - 02-09-2012, 04:13 PM - Forum: Chaos Discussion - No Replies

Slightly enhanced version of what's in news.txt:

--Map with new castle design is in! This castle is more like the original battle drome castle plus it is even better for base fighting play.

Thanks to all those that brainstormed ideas, especially wobit, Axe Demento, and Capt. ARGH! Please give feedback here:

http://www.subspace....he-hallucitron/

--JACKPOT Reward formula has changed! Previously, every freq member would get the full reward,

now it is effectively split between them: rewardPoints * freqsize / numberOfTeamMembers

--Master of Chaos was won by Static Burn when, 17 minutes into the final round, he greened shields, and JOCKER charged. Congrats!

--Master of Chaos rule change going forward:

During the first minute of the final round, all greens will disappear.

This keeps the event true to Chaos Dueling which often occurs at the edge of the map, where there are no greens. It will also discourage endless running and greening during the final round.

--Tuesday Feb 7th saw the highest Chaos population at any time since early 2009. We hit 39 players, and had >30 playing for about an hour around 10pm ET. Many heavy turrets, hunt freqs, but still no squads swarming/owning specific map areas. In any event -- good stuff!
